RESUMEN

This study addresses a limitation of prior research on pectoralis major (PMaj) thickness changes during the pectoralis fly exercise using a wearable ultrasound imaging setup. Although previous studies used manual measurement and subjective evaluation, it is important to acknowledge the subsequent limitations of automating widespread applications. We then employed a deep learning model for image segmentation and automated measurement to solve the problem and study the additional quantitative supplementary information that could be provided. Our results revealed increased PMaj thickness changes in the coronal plane within the probe detection region when real-time ultrasound imaging (RUSI) visual biofeedback was incorporated, regardless of load intensity (50% or 80% of one-repetition maximum). Additionally, participants showed uniform thickness changes in the PMaj in response to enhanced RUSI biofeedback. Notably, the differences in PMaj thickness changes between load intensities were reduced by RUSI biofeedback, suggesting altered muscle activation strategies. We identified the optimal measurement location for the maximal PMaj thickness close to the rib end and emphasized the lightweight applicability of our model for fitness training and muscle assessment. Further studies can refine load intensities, investigate diverse parameters, and employ different network models to enhance accuracy. This study contributes to our understanding of the effects of muscle physiology and exercise training.

RESUMEN

Creating a vivid video from the event or scenario in our imagination is a truly fascinating experience. Recent advancements in text-to-video synthesis have unveiled the potential to achieve this with prompts only. While text is convenient in conveying the overall scene context, it may be insufficient to control precisely. In this paper, we explore customized video generation by utilizing text as context description and motion structure (e.g. frame- wise depth) as concrete guidance. Our method, dubbed Make-Your-Video, involves joint-conditional video generation using a Latent Diffusion Model that is pre-trained for still image synthesis and then promoted for video generation with the introduction of temporal modules. This two-stage learning scheme not only reduces the computing resources required, but also improves the performance by transferring the rich concepts available in image datasets solely into video generation. Moreover, we use a simple yet effective causal attention mask strategy to enable longer video synthesis, which mitigates the potential quality degradation effectively. Experimental results show the superiority of our method over existing baselines, particularly in terms of temporal coherence and fidelity to users' guidance. In addition, our model enables several intriguing applications that demonstrate potential for practical usage. Transient elastography (TE), recommended by the WHO, is an established method for characterizing liver fibrosis via liver stiffness measurement (LSM). However, technical barriers remain towards point-of-care application, as conventional TE requires wired connections, possesses a bulky size, and lacks adequate imaging guidance for precise liver localization. In this work, we report the design, phantom validation, and clinical evaluation of a palm-sized TE system that enables simultaneous B-mode imaging and LSM. The performance of this system was validated experimentally using tissue-equivalent reference phantoms (1.45-75 kPa). Comparative studies against other liver elastography techniques, including conventional TE and two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE), were performed to evaluate its reliability and validity in adults with various chronic liver diseases. Intra- and inter-operator reliability of LSM were established by an elastography expert and a novice. A good agreement was observed between the Young's modulus reported by the phantom manufacturer and this system (bias: 1.1-8.6%). Among 121 patients, liver stiffness measured by this system and conventional TE were highly correlated (r = 0.975) and strongly agreed with each other (mean difference: -0.77 kPa). Inter-correlation of this system with conventional TE and 2D-SWE was observed. Excellent-to-good operator reliability was demonstrated in 60 patients (ICCs: 0.824-0.913). We demonstrated the feasibility of employing a fully integrated phased array probe for reliable and valid LSM, guided by real-time B-mode imaging of liver anatomy. This system represents the first technical advancement toward point-of-care liver fibrosis assessment. Its small footprint, along with B-mode guidance capability, improves examination efficiency and scales up screening for liver fibrosis.

The effect of different heat inputs of 1.45 kJ/mm, 1.78 kJ/mm and 2.31 kJ/mm on the microstructure and mechanical properties of deposited metals of the self-developed AWS A5.28 E120C-K4 high strength steel flux-cored wire was studied by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and mechanical property test. With the increase in heat input, the results showed that the microstructure of deposited metals became coarse. Acicular ferrite increased at first and then decreased, granular bainite increased and degenerated upper bainite and martensite decreased slightly. Under the low heat input of 1.45 kJ/mm, the cooling rate was fast and the element diffusion was uneven, which caused composition segregation and easy to form large size inclusions SiO2-TiC-CeAlO3 with weak binding to the matrix. Under the middle heat input of 1.78 kJ/mm, the composite rare earth inclusions in dimples were mainly TiC-CeAlO3. The dimples were small and uniformly distributed, and the dimple fracture mainly depended on the wall-breaking connection between medium-sized dimples rather than an intermediate media. Under the high heat input of 2.31 kJ/mm, SiO2 was easy to adhere to high melting point Al2O3 oxides to form irregular composite inclusions. Such irregular inclusions do not need to absorb too much energy to form necking. Finally, the integrated effects of microstructure and inclusions resulted in the optimum mechanical properties of deposited metals with a heat input of 1.78 kJ/mm, which was a tensile strength of 793 MPa and an average impact toughness at -40 °C of 56 J.

We developed an innovative approach that couples headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to detect a volatile pesticide (i.e., fonofos) in a liquid complex matrix (i.e., apple juice). A gold nanoparticles-coated fiber was fabricated by reducing gold(III) on a chemically etched stainless steel wire to extract pesticide, using SPME. The fabricated fibers were then tested by a headspace-SPME method and a dip-SPME method, followed by SERS detection of fonofos in water and apple juice samples. Using the headspace-SPME method, we can detect as low as 5 ppb of fonofos in water and apple juice, compared with the dip-SPME method, which cannot detect lower than 10 ppb in water and 50 ppb in apple juice. This study demonstrated the potential capability of the headspace-SPME-SERS method for rapid (within 30 min) and sensitive detection of volatile and vaporizable compounds in complex matrices. The developed method could be a potential alternative approach to the gas chromatography method. Future work is needed to optimize the fiber by minimizing signal variation, and it should be tested in a variety of targeted compounds and matrices.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of laparoscopic and open proctectomy on plasma levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). METHODS: From January 2011 to December 2012, 100 rectal cancer patients in Shantou Central Hospital were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into laparoscopic (LR) group and open (OR) group based on the decision of the patients. There were 63 patients in the LR group (44 cases undergoing low anterior resection and 19 abdominoperineal resection) and 37 patients in the OR group(26 cases undergoing low anterior resection and 11 abdominoperineal resection). Double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunohistochemistry was used to detect the level of VEGF on 1-day before and 1-day, 3-day, 7-day after operation. RESULTS: In the LR group, the postoperative levels of VEGF increased slowly, and the level of VEGF was significantly higher than that before operation until the 7-day after operation(P<0.05) regardless of the procedure. In the OR group, all the postoperative levels of VEGF were significantly increased(P<0.05). There was no significant difference of the VEGF level on 1-day before and 1-day after operation between the two groups(all P>0.05). The VEGF level in the OR group was significantly higher than that in the LR group on the day 3 and day 7 after operation(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Compared with open approach, laparoscopic proctectomy has smaller short-term impact on the plasma level of VEGF in rectal cancer patients.
